Parts of SentenceSentence : a group of words that expresses a complete thought. Every sentence contains a subject and a predicate (also called “ verb ”). Other part of sentence is object. Subject The subject of a sentence is a noun or pronoun that does, causes, or receives the action of the verb. It has gender, number, and person. Object:
The direct object of a sentence recieves the action of the verb. A direct object answers the question “who” or “what” of the verb. It must come directly after the verb. ( i.e. I guarded a our home. “our home ” is the direct object.)
An indirect object receives the action of the verb indirectly. ( ex John gave the book to me. “To me” is the indirect object.)
A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition and a noun or pronoun, with or without adjectives. The noun or pronoun is the object of the preposition. ( ex. Jim placed the spoon on the table. Alice learned in School. “Table” and “School” are objects of the preposition.) PredicateThe predicate (called also “verb”) is the portion of the sentence containing the verb. A predicate says something about the subject of the sentence. There is not a direct correspondence between the parts of the sentence and the parts of speech -- the subject of a sentence, for example, could be a noun, a pronoun, or even an entire phrase or clause. Like the parts of speech, however, the parts of the sentence form part of the basic vocabulary of grammar, and it is important that you take some time to learn and understand them. |
